Hazelnuts are a type of tree nut like walnuts, Brazil nuts, pistachios, pecans, cashews, and almonds. Like most of them, hazelnuts are a nutrient-dense food. They are high in vitamin E, an antioxidant fat-soluble vitamin, monounsaturated fatty acids, and antioxidants. Hazelnuts also contain minerals like magnesium, copper, phosphorus, and manganese. With or without the skin (the brown layer around the hazelnut), they are a good source of fiber.

For Christmas, I remember my mom used to buy them whole, inside the shell, and we would open them with a nutcracker. They were a perfect decoration on the table and an excellent snack for the holidays.

I recommend using dark chocolate chips for this recipe. The flavor will be more rich and intense. Also, when we consume dark chocolate, at least 70-85%, we eat food with antioxidant properties, such as flavanols and polyphenols. Dark chocolate also contains a small amount of fiber, magnesium, iron, zinc, phosphorus, and copper.

To enhance the flavor of this recipe, you must buy roasted hazelnuts. You can find roasted hazelnuts at your grocery store or online. If you purchase the hazelnuts unroasted, spread three cups on a baking sheet with parchment paper and roast for 5-10 minutes. If you have some leftover of raw hazelnuts, you can throw them in a high-speed blender with water and vanilla and make your hazelnut milk. You can also eat them as a snack or create your hazelnut butter (first step on the directions).

This dark chocolate hazelnut spread is a staple in my pantry. We add this to almost everything: strawberries, toast, pancakes, waffles, crepes, and the list goes on and on. I hope you enjoy the recipe as much as we do!
